You want a White House but you don’t know which white paint to use. The best thing to do is buy a bunch of sample pots (I generally choose 3 or 4) and paint squares onto the side of your house.

This is a quick guide that I’ve used on when choosing exterior paint colours for our renovations:

  1. Modern House - you can go for a brighter white. This means the undertone will have a cool undertone. In the Dulux range, the colours with a cooler undertone are Lexicon and Lexicon Half. I like these colours for the exterior walls paired with gutters in Colorbond ‘Surfmist’ for a coastal look.

  2. Traditional House - I like a white that has a cream undertone but still looks white #nottoocreamy. What does that mean?!?!? Choose a warmer white. In the Dulux range, I like Natural White - it has a warmer undertone and is the ‘lighest’ of warm whites. In house #3, I chose Natural White for the exterior with Colorbond ‘Monument’ for the Gutters.

  3. Mixed House - our current house is a mix of styles. It’s a bit of everything. It has a traditional front with weather boards but a more a modern extension on the back. I needed to choose a paint that could marry both the front and back into a cohesive whole. So how did I choose? I went to the paint shop, bought some sample pots and painted the side of the house (photo above). I was leaning towards Lexicon Half when looking at the swatches in the shop but I fell in love with Snowy Mountains Half once it was painted up on the side of the house. I can’t wait to show you the before and after photos on insta when it’s done. :)
