The Future of Home Design - Mediterranean Style
In home design, there’s a tidal shift towards a Mediterranean style of home #medhome. For the last decade, the Hampton’s style has dominated new home builds. This is now changing with new custom home builds shifting towards Modern Farmhouse, Coastal Barns or "Mediterranean”. Today, I’m going to explore the features of Mediterannean #medhome style.
The “Mediterranean” style is characterised by arches, white rendered exteriors and plaster walls inside. This style takes inspiration from homes in Ibiza to Spain.
This style is characterised by natural or hand finished products including:
concrete bench tops (and basins);
plaster walls inside;
rendered white walls outside;
light timber joinery; and
terracotta.
Some gorgeous examples of this style inlcude:
In Burleigh, bajo el sol (under the sun) was created by owner Kelle Howard with inspiration from the lifestyle of Ibiza and Greece. (Photos 3 & 4 above)
In Byron Bay, The Range, created by Emma and Tom Lane, is a Spanish inspired home (Photos 1 & 2 above)
In Cronulla, @the.crossproject is a major renovation of an old home (photos below). It is described as a modern Mediterranean inspired family home (with interiors by @lowiinteriors).
The use of terra cotta by #medhome, is vastly different to the old orange terracotta tiles used in thousands of ‘Tuscan’ style homes throughout the 1990s. The difference, with Terracotta 2.0, is that it has a handmade finish with rough edges. Reclaimed bricks are also used in a herringbone pattern on paths and pool areas. At the Cross Project, the pool (photo above) is surrounded by terracotta with a limestone border. The pairing of the terracotta and limestone is WOW.
